Sponsor Spotlight

It’s time to meet some of the players on the In Spaces Between sponsorship team – Kate from Betty Means Business, Jane from SIX things, Amanda from Fuel Urban Wellness, Polly from Polly’s Path and Dana from Birds of a Feather.

Take a read below and head over to their online digs to say hi!

Introducing: Betty Means Business

Kate Byrne is the force behind Betty Means Business. Kate is a roller derby-loving green-juice-drinking yoga-junkie, who can swear with the sailors and out-fancy the Queen. A debilitating spinal injury forced her to take time out from her grown-up life as co-founder of a successful management consultancy and figured out what she really wanted to do when she grows up.

One part entrepreneurial maven, one part irresistible super nerd, Kate has an insatiable appetite for life, art, nature, creative endeavour, women in business for themselves, making a difference and laughing out loud. Kate is a Betty on a mission to quench your thirst for bullshit free creative inspiration and business advice.

From Kate:

In 3 words, I am… Focused on healing

I am obsessed with… Roller derby, healing myself, Japanese food, and helping kick ass creative trailblazers with entrepreneurial aspirations grow their dream empires.

I’m on a mission to… Explode the starving artist myth.

I’m reading… Super Brain (Deepak Chopra + Rudolph Tanzi), Shark Tales (Barbara Corcoran) and A Christmas Carol (Charles Dickens). I know, it’s a weird combo, but totally true!

Words to live by… I love this passage from F.Scott Fitzgerald:

“It’s never to late, or in my case too early, to be whoever you want to be.  There’s no time limit, stop whenever you want.  You can change or stay the same; there are no rules to this thing.  We can make the best or the worst of it.  I hope you make the best of it.  And I hope you see things that startle you.  I hope you feel things you never felt before.  I hope you meet people with a different point of view.  I hope you live a life you’re proud of.  If you find that you’re not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again.”

Introducing: SIX things

I’m Jane and I’m a mum, wife, coffee addict, graphic designer, blogger, health nut and shop owner. I think that sums me up perfectly.

I run a graphic and web design business called j6 design and after building successful online businesses for other people for 10 years, I decided it would be fun to start my own. Being a designer, I am a little crazy, so the Mad Hatter / Alice in Wonderland theme suited me to a tea.

My online shop, SIX things, is based on the quote “Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.” We stock homewares, art, gifts, clothes, toys, party things and more.

In 3 words, I am… Passionate, creative, happy.

I’m obsessed with… My work. I love what I do but I know that life is a balance so all work and no play is not a good idea.

I’m on a mission to…. Gosh I don’t know! I want to be able to ride my skateboard wearing thongs (flip flops), as that skill currently eludes me.

I’m reading… My teenage son recommended I read the Eragon Inheritance series. I’m on book 3 right now and enjoying spending my days at the beach dissolving into a world of dragons, elves and dwarves!

Words to live by… “Everything is funny, if you can laugh at it.” ~ Lewis Carroll.

Introducing: Fuel Urban Wellness

Experiencing Adrenal Fatigue after 13 years in the corporate world of advertising, Amanda stepped back from a manic-paced career and followed her passion instead. A myriad of health conditions fell away as soon as stress was eliminated and a renewed sense of purpose sprung forth and after studying at the Institute of Integrated Nutrition in New York, she now works as a Holistic Health Coach and writes at Fuel Urban Wellness, helping busy women fuel their lives with health, pleasure and bundles of energy.

From Amanda:

In 3 words, I am… Creative, ambitious, genuine.

I’m obsessed with… Raw Desserts.

I’m on a mission to…. Show people that eating healthily can taste amazing and really does make a huge difference to our health, energy and passion for life.

I’m reading… The Mystery of Mercy Close by Marian Keyes. I read tons of non-fiction books a year and only one novel – this time I found the biggest one I could find to lose myself in for weeks.

Words to live by… If you were already living your dream life, what would you do differently? How would you behave today?

Introducing: Polly’s Path

Polly Noble is a wellness writer, holistic health coach, author, two-time cancer survivor and the creator of health and wellness website Polly’s Path to Health & Happiness. Through her books, workshops and blog posts, Polly inspires and encourages others to take back the reins on their health, become aware of how their actions impact their life and help them to make small changes which can make a big difference.

From Polly:

In 3 words, I am… Curious, loving and determined.

I’m obsessed with… Being the best I can be.

I’m on a mission to… Educate and help people live a life they love.

I’m reading… May Cause Miracles by Gabby Bernstein.

Words to live by… Shine your light as bright as you can as there is only one of you and boy, does the world need you!

Introducing: Birds of a Feather

Birds of a Feather is a boutique letterpress and custom design studio based on the Gold Coast, specialising in creating custom wedding and event invitations, personal and corporate stationery as well as letterpress lovelies for the home.

From Dana:

In 3 words, I am… Happy, inspired, creative.

I am obsessed with… The country! I want to live in a big beautiful barn out in the country, with horses and dogs and a herb garden. I just have to try to convince my husband first!

I am on a mission to… Extend my little studio. I am currently on the hunt for another beautiful old press to join our family.

I’m reading… I wish I was! I have literally hit the ground running this year and have not had a spare moment to sit down and open up a good book. If I was,I would probably re-read (for the hundredth time!) my favourite series by Francine Rivers called ‘The Mark of the Lion.’ Such a powerful and inspiring story.

Words to live by… Do what you love. It is so simple. Birds of a Feather has been exactly this for me – I used to spend all my time dreaming about one day having my own letterpress studio until I finally reached the point where I decided there was no use dreaming about it, I actually just needed to just jump in and do it! I have never looked back and I can honestly say I wake up everyday, blessed to know that I am living my dream and doing what I love. Discover what you love, surround yourself with people who believe in your dreams, and don’t look back.

Sponsor Spotlight: The Small Garden, Yoga with Nadine + Meridians in Motion

It’s time to meet some of the other members on the In Spaces Between sponsorship team!

In their own words below, you’ll hear from Carolynn from The Small Garden (you NEED to check out their gorgeous new terrariums), Nadine from Yoga With Nadine whose Bali Bliss Retreat sounds like my kind of heaven and Melissa, an acupuncturist who will not only help you feel amazing but can help you look damn fine too.

Take a read below and head over to their online digs to say hi!

Introducing: The Small Garden

‘No space is too small for a garden.’ With this philosophy in mind, my husband Tom and I opened The Small Garden, a landscape design and installation service for small urban outdoor spaces – think apartments, courtyards, roof terraces and balconies.

Making the most of the space available, we create functional outdoor areas lush with greenery and innovative furnishings. Just recently we also opened an online shop stocking a curated range of unique outdoor products and accessories, all the sorts of things we’d love to have on our own balcony at home.

In 3 words, I am… Creative, positive and always planning my next wanderlust adventure.

Favourite place/s… The beach, especially the Noosa National Park Beaches (I got married here earlier this year).

Obsessed with… Anything INDIA such a vibrant and diverse country – I’m planning our belated honeymoon here – cook books, textiles, my organic veggie garden and my puppy Lola.

Listening to… A bit of an eclectic mix but on high rotation right now Angus Stone ‘Broken Brights’, The Black Keys ‘El Comino’, Lana Del Ray ‘Born to Die and anything by Faithless and Fleetwood Mac.

Reading… My bedside table always seems stacked high with books, but currently on the reading list – ‘The Space Between Us’ by Thrity Umrigar, ‘Tasting India’ by Christine Manfield, ‘The Stylists Guide to NYC’ by Sibella Court and ‘Scar Tissue’ by Anthony Kiedis.

Parting words of wisdom… ‘Make this moment count’ seems to really resonate with me. If you have a dream, take a deep breath and just give it a go. 12 months ago our business was simply a dream. Believe in yourself and your skills and don’t be scared to make mistakes or ask for help along the way.

Introducing: Yoga with Nadine

I grew up quite certain that being able to feel my body would be dangerous (I had good evidence for that, but that’s another, longer, story). And then there was the overanalysing. Man, when you get stuck in your own head, it’s amazing the sh*t you can come up with.

Through yoga, I’ve been able to channel this unfortunate tendency into something useful: Svadhyaya, or self-reflection-without-judgement. I now passionately share this transformative experience, empowering others to find their inner strength and sovereignty. Sometimes people call me a yoga shaman. I like that – it means I’ve done my job properly.

In 3 words, I am… Loving my life

Favourite place/s… Melbourne’s Elwood Beach for long walks, Miss Jackson for coffee and corn cakes, and Ubudin Bali for its massages, heavenly juices, and happy people.

Obsessed with… Cats. And coffee. And yoga. Also, chairs. Eames ones. I’m a bit obsessive, can you tell?

Listening to… Fiona Apple’s new album.

Reading… Guides I found on Google about how to build a website, Vogue and Vogue living, Design Sponge, and this blog, of course.

Parting words of wisdom… Everything, anything, is possible when you take full responsibility for how you live. You have the power to do anything, you just need to believe in it.

Introducing: Meridians in Motion

I’m an acupuncturist who specialises in cosmetic acupuncture, women’s health and paediatrics. But that’s not all I’m interested in. Acupuncture is a fantastic natural way to combat many other health problems found in everyday life – actually, there ‘s not much acupuncture can’t help with. My goal is to help people achieve health, happiness and balance in their lives and I feel the best way to do that is naturally.

In 3 words, I am… Caring, determined, enthusiastic.

Favourite place/s… Home, Thailand, Greek Islands, Spain.

Obsessed with… My family and friends, a good laugh, finding new recipes, health.

Listening to… Honestly? The Wiggles and nursery rhyme CD’s. My son has reached a beautiful age where he loves dancing to music and copying the actions to nursery rhymes so we spend a lot of time singing and dancing along with the music.

Reading… I’m actually reading two books at the moment: The Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy (along with the rest of the world it seems) and Shonishin: Paediatric Acupuncture. I’m always looking for ways to broaden my knowledge and acupuncture is so diverse in the conditions it treats. At the moment I’m looking for new ways to treat babies and children as I’ve found, with my son especially, that the way I have traditionally been taught can’t always be applied. I’m branching out into a Japanese style of acupuncture that doesn’t involve the use of needles when treating children.

Parting words of wisdom… While travelling around Europe one of our tour guides said something that has stuck with me ever since. “It’s not wrong, it’s just different”. I believe by keeping this in mind it can help you understand and accept so many new and wonderful experiences in life. For example, accept another culture’s way of thinking or doing things, see another person’s point of view, try something you’ve never done before. In keeping with that idea, if you haven’t had acupuncture before, why not try it? It’s not wrong, it’s just a different treatment that you haven’t tried yet.

Sponsor Spotlight: Dream Delight Inspire + Ask In Remains

Welcome to another Sponsor Spotlight!

Today I’m introducing you to two bloggers that there’s a good chance you’ll already know – Kim from Dream. Delight. Inspire and Noémie from As Ink Remains.

Just like the girls I introduced you to last week, I adore both of these inspiring souls and regularly check in to their sites to soak up their latest delightful offerings. If you’re not already familiar with these beauties, check out the below to make yourself acquainted – stat!

Introducing: Dream. Delight. Inspire.

Dream. Delight. Inspire. is a blog that was created to do just that – help you DREAM of places you want to go, things you want to achieve, who you’d like to become. DELIGHT you by writing imaginative, quirky, informative, sometimes (okay, often) rambling posts that will hopefully bring a smile to your face. INSPIRE you in every way, to make you see that anything is possible.

My name is Kimberley Smith and I’m the blonde-headed Sagittarius behind this blog, writing to motivate people to really look at their lives and make choices that are going to lead them down the path of adventure and happiness.

In 3 words, I am… Enthusiastic, chaotic, passionate.

Favourite place/s… Paris, Montreux in Switzerland, the little grassy clearing across the road from my house and my bed (c’mon, you know it’s one of your faves too!).

Obsessed with… Multi-tasking (terrible habit), inspiring people to take risks and challenge themselves, raw chocolate, helping people discover their voices (I’m a singing teacher amongst other things) and great coffee.

Listening to… I’m loving Bernhoft, Coldplay, Sia and Beyonce for newies and Queen, The Who and Creedance Clearwater Revival for oldies.

Reading… Actually I’m being a nerd and reading about Complete Vocal Technique for my singing business. I’m about to launch a new site (Inspired to Sing) so I’m upping my research and soaking up the wisdom of many different teachers.

Parting words of wisdom… If you’re not excited about your life, you need to change something. It’s scarier to live your life clouded in unhappiness rather than take a leap of faith towards what lights you up. Stay in the present and take one day at a time – you’ve got this!

Introducing: As Ink Remains

My name is Noémie and my blog As Ink Remains was started in February 2010. I started blogging because I needed a creative outlet, and blogged about the things that made me happy; which was usually all things pretty in fashion and design, and then somehow turned it into a blog about my life in Toronto.  And food.

As for me, I’m 28 years old and I live in Toronto. I am a graphic designer/photographer/cat aficionado. I grew up in Ottawa and moved to Toronto for school, where I’ve since made my home with my husband and cat. I primarily design graphics for apparel, logos and simple websites, and take photos.  I have a penchant for good coffee, stinky cheese, the Internet, and collect cameras, and may or may not be a plant hoarder.

In 3 words, I am… Happy, ambitious, and hopeful.

Favourite place/s… Brooklyn, Nagarkut in Nepal, and anywhere where they serve great coffee.

Obsessed with… Mid-Century furniture, blogs, travel, great company.

Listening to… Lots of stuff, but most recently: Blonds’  “Time”, Twin Shadow’s “The One”, and Cat Power’s “Cherokee.

Reading… The current issue of Apartemento – I’m such a sucker for the pictures in that magazine.

Parting words of wisdom… Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly, you’re doing the impossible. – by Francis of Assisi, St.  This has applied in many things I’ve accomplished. I’m currently working on my running and it’s a daily battle – but when I look back on when I started, I’m proud of myself.

Sponsor Spotlight: Lucy Spartalis Photography + Pretty Fluffy

Over the next little while, I’m going to introduce you to some players on the In Spaces Between team – my stunning sponsors.

In keeping with the integrity of the site, I’m very particular about who I bring on board as a sponsor. It’s super important to me that the blogs and businesses hanging out in my sidebar are people that I think you’d love to get to know as well – bloggers with sites you’ll love to follow or businesses, creative or otherwise, that are in line with your interests – and like anything I recommend, there has to be a genuine love there from my perspective so the whole transaction feels authentic and effortless.

I can assure you that the two beauties below, a Melbourne-based photographer whose wedding and band images will make you swoon and a blogger/ animal lover/ TV producer who will inspire you with her words (and have you dreaming of a cuddly new pooch!), are people you’ll want in your circle too.

In their words, get to know them below… then head over and say hello, check out their stuff, hang out in their pretty spaces. Meeting new people rocks!

Introducing: Lucy Spartalis

I grew up in Adelaide, and after years of obsessively photographing my friends I decided to take a course at the Centre for Creative Photography. My love of portraiture quickly turned from a hobby into what knew I was meant to be doing, and eventually it led me to Melbourne. A few features in Frankie, Polka Dot Bride and Etsy have recently made my business explode, and I’m loving every minute of it. I photograph bands, weddings, and the occasional editorial, and I could not be more in love with my job.

In 3 words, I am… Dancing. Shooting. Dreaming.

Favourite place/s… The deck overlooking the water in front of my family’s shack on Hindmarsh Island, South Australia. It’s the most serene place in my world, and one of the biggest things I miss about back home.

Obsessed with… Soft cheese. Golden Girls re-runs. Records. Adventures. New restaurants. Shoes. Love.

Listening to… So many things, but huge favourites right now are the blissed out sounds of Beach House’s ‘Bloom’, Sharon Van Etten’s ‘SVE’, and ‘The Lion’s Roar’ by Sweden’s First Aid Kit.

Reading… Miranda July’s book of short stories, ‘No One Belongs Here More Than You’. Her imagination is unlike anyone else’s. I’ve never laughed so loud at something so strange.

Parting words of wisdom… ‘Life is what happens when you make other plans’ has never been truer for me than right now. I’ve had some major changes in my life in recent times, changes that could have really thrown me if I had let them. But it’s incredible to see how tough times can open you up to new possibilities if you don’t shut yourself off to them. Things don’t always work out they way you thought they would, and it’s easy to feel lost when they don’t… but often it’s the unexpected stuff that blows you away, that makes you stop and realise that you can’t plan everything, and that’s okay. Not knowing where life is going to take you – and being okay with that – is pretty exhilarating.
