Making Me Happy

{I was going to write a separate post for what I’m about to say but it feels right to weave it in here so I will. Note to self and universe and anyone else that has an open ear: do more of what feels right}.

If you’ve been hanging around here for a while, you’ve probably heard me say that I love to read.

I’ve always been a huge reader/ devourer-of-pages/ word nerd and for this I can thank my parents, who spent a tremendous amount of time reading to their first-born in the way that most parents read to kids – the same book, 50 times. In a row.

I quickly latched on to the whole reading biz and it became a sweet sanctuary for me – to the point where I used to tear through books so quickly as a young child that my parents stopped buying them for me after a while, instead taxiing me back and forth to the local library where I’d try and push the ’10 book limit’ and slide another copy of The Babysitter’s Club or whatever it was I was engrossed in through the beepers.

Fast forward to the weekend just gone… also known as, Remembering Why I Love to Read So Much.

I’m getting tired of the “It’s been a hectic week/ month/ year” story but it’s hard not to draw parallels in this instance because reading was the first thing to slide once my schedule really got out of hand earlier this year.

Sure, I’ve stuck my nose in some great books in the past 7 or so months, but it’s always felt like an after-thought. Something I knew I “should” do because I’m an insatiable knowledge-sponge and love to learn, but the thing is, it was always minus a certain vital component – doing it out sheer pleasure.

On the weekend, I got back to me. The computer was turned off, the task list was ignored, tracksuit pants were slipped on and I unfurled into the deliciousness of Cheryl Strayed’s story in her book ‘Wild.’

As I burned through almost all of that 311 page masterpiece on Saturday (it was promptly finished first thing Sunday morning), I realised that I read to think. Of course, I came to this conclusion this as I was reading, which exemplifies what I just said, but nonetheless, that aha! moment was a poignant one.

Reading gives me pause, which leads to me working stuff out in my head as I go. Inspiration emerges. Other people’s stories help me make sense of my own – or make me realise how different my own are (either way is A-OK).

Undoubtedly, this has to do with the fact that more creative stuff bubbles up when you make space for it and slow down, but also, I think when you hang out in your happy place, you connect back up to that beautiful power source that is YOU. It doesn’t matter whether it’s surfing, or riding a horse, or playing an instrument or painting – or anything else. All that matters is that you make time to “go there” (because the rewards are so, so worth it).

On the back of my little insight-filled endeavour, I have a question for you:

What have you stopped making time for? Is there anything you can let go of or let slide so that you can invite more of what really lights you up back into your life?

Let’s get a list going in the comments. I want to know what sets your soul on fire!

Dreamcasting in Le Magic Moleskine

A few years ago I christened one of my Moleskine diaries my “Magic Moleskine” after filling it to the brim with things I wanted to manifest by specific dates. The whole ‘magic’ thing was just a cute, throw-away line at first but after things started happening, even Ramai started saying  “Write it in the Magic Moleskine!”

I’ve been a vision-boarder/ goalsetter/ big dreamer fo-evah and a day so it didn’t surprise me too much that the majority of the things I’d written in my diary came to fruition, but I’ve always treasured that unassuming black diary with pictures stuck everywhere and big, black words graffitied on the pages. I guess that’s where my love for this particular brand of stationery really took hold.

As part of the mid-year review/ shake-up I’m undergoing at the moment, I bought a brand spankin’ new Moleskine last week – an 18 month one that starts this month and finishes in December 2013 (perfect!) – and I’ve started to do the same as before, filling the pages with affirmations, dreams, ‘things I love’ lists and short journal entries. As you can see above, I also enlisted the help of my friends Tiger’s Eye (great for focusing and insight) and Quartz (for amplifying wishes and visualisations) to max the good juju.

Thank you in advance Magic Moleskine 2.0. I have a feeling you’re going to be even more powerful than your predecessor.

Outrageous Organisation

I’m having fun getting all my ducks in a row at the moment and went a bit bananas in kikki.K buying a big monthly planner and two to-do list notepads (one is super cute – it even has a space that says “What I’m Thankful For”).

I’ve also finally made time to clean out two email inboxes that desperately needed some deleting action, renewed a professional membership, paid a bunch of bills, got my tax info off to our accountant, finalised some web copy for a friend and cleaned out my bookshelves this week. Organisation station. Feels gooooooooooood, my friends.

Men’s Tees

I’m loving men’s tees and my husband’s big, chunky knit jumpers this winter. Picked up this pretty (ha, sorry boys) pink Silent Theory number the other day at David Jones and I may have to go back for a few more colours I think. Comfort… and then some.

Vistaprint

Does anyone out there use Vistaprint?

I seriously love ’em. Our Thank You cards arrived a few days ago and they look fab. This weekend’s job: writing them and posting them!

If you’re part of the crew over on the In Spaces Between Facebook page (and if you’re not, come join us – there’s lots of stuff over there that doesn’t appear on the blog), you’ll know I do something called One Word Wednesday, where I ask you to describe how you’re feeling in one word.

I’m going to follow that same line of thinking here today and ask you to think of One Thing you’re thankful for. Just one thing. Of course, if you’ve got a whole scroll to share with us, you know that is always encouraged, but I know you’re all busy little kittens so if you don’t have time for all the details, feel free to keep it simple.

What’s the best thing that’s happened to you over the past week?

*** As an ‘added extra,’ I’d love to hear about the passion you feel like you’ve stopped making time for and how you plan on “getting back there.”

Making Me Happy

What are your thoughts on luck?

Do you think luck is something that happens by chance and is completely out of your control? Or are you more inclined to believe the point of view of English psychologist Dr Richard Wiseman, whose research claims that lucky people possess four basic psychological traits which unlucky people don’t:

1. They have the ability to maximise “chance” opportunities.

2. They listen to their gut feelings.

3. They expect good fortune.

4. They see the bright side of bad luck.

I’m definitely in the second camp and I truly believe that every day comes with an opportunity to attract more good fortune and greater joy. New days, clean slates, bright beginnings. Totally created. Without exception, the times in my life when I’ve focused on negative situations or felt hard done by are the times I’ve felt trapped in a cycle of “bad luck” – when really, I was just struggling to see the bright side or the greater learning.

Want to know my fail-safe way for creating more goodness? 1 x pen, 1 x notebook and a big list of appreciation for all the joy that already exists in your world. Too easy!

Treating Myself With New Loot

A few days after our wedding I started dreaming about my winter wardrobe.

With our nuptials taking centre stage since January this year, fashion and shopping had definitely taken a bit of a backseat for me, but when the shops started calling me last week (not literally – although, how dangerous would that be?), I asked myself: “Who am I to resist their sweet, sweet hustlin.'”?

And so I went.

And I bought:

Several Sportsgirl knits (not shown, but if you’re keen to stock up, their knits are going at great prices at the moment FYI); 2 x Tony Bianco ankle boots; Industrie flannet jacket for Ramai; Neon Hart shirt; Peter Alexander Floral Wide-Leg PJ Pants (umm, these are rocking my world!); Peter Alexander loose grey camisole to go with the PJ pants; Bonds striped singlet; Bonds striped hoodie; and my favourite purchase, a gold skull storage jar from Typo.

Small Changes, Big Hoorays!

I generally change up the decor in our house every few months so over the weekend I added some of our wedding decorations to our living space, and the result feels so fresh!

Hot pink has definitely weaseled it’s way in to our lounge room with the cushions I showed you last week, and some pink spinny chairs we have at our desk that are draped with sheepskin. I’m really liking it. Sometimes little tweaks are the best kind.

Dinner Dates with My Husband + New Discoveries

I have a secret hobby – discovering new places to eat, eating there immediately after and then telling the whole world about it. Seriously, how do I get on the payroll at a few of the establishments I rave about to anyone that will listen? Pretty sure I could be raking in the (pizza) dough (ooh, snap!)

I’ve always been a big believer in the ol’ “sharing is caring” adage – unless we’re talking chocolate or shoes – so without any further ado, let me introduce you to one of my new finds: The Office.

Inspired by The Office TV show, this super cool restaurant in Palm Beach is run by the outrageously energetic Katie Goodwin, who incidentally I used to hang out with as a teenager (I didn’t make the realisation until the day before we went). The food is Italian and delicious and it has funny little names like The Mark Zuckerberg or the Chairman of the Board. Cute.

The place is completely decked out like an office, and there’s a Boardroom for group functions and a Valley room for getting loose enjoying a quiet beverage with friends. We struggled to get a booking and I saw the waitresses turning away “walk-in’s” so I’m thinking The Office will be the ‘new place to be’ on the Gold Coast – which suits me fine, as it’s about 5 minutes from home!

Freedom

It might sound strange to say I feel “free” since I work full-time and have a blog/ other commitments (don’t we all), but after the hectic storm that has been my life for the first 6 months of this year, I can truly say that I feel relaxed, unencumbered and totally carefree right now. Life feels easy and light.

There was this constant niggling thought that I should be doing something when I was organising the wedding, but in the wake of all that, it’s all about pacing myself and living my mantra: “Do more of what makes you happy.”

I’m currently writing an e-book (and good news – it’ll be beautifully designed AND it’ll be free for you all!) and at first, I wanted to knock it out in a few days but something inside me told me to ease up. So I’m learning this whole ‘slow’ bizness… and loving it. Reading, admiring the ocean, hanging in the park, snuggling up in my PJ’s and baking treats for work friends have all been bringing me joy of late, and that, my friends, is awesome.

Happy Finances

Something that’s made me really happy over the past week is the knowledge our wedding was totally paid off before the Big Day, meaning that there’s been no lingering bills or loans hanging over our heads now that the dust has settled.

Ramai and I funded our wedding 100% by ourselves, so it feels good to look back with a certain degree of satisfaction knowing that we worked towards the day of our dreams, and we pulled it off by sticking to a regular savings plan and building our funds steadily over time.

Despite my little shopping blowout mentioned above (err, we’ll pretend you didn’t see that) we’re right back into saving mode now and have set a new target which we’re both excited about reaching. If you don’t commit to it, it won’t happen after all, and we love travelling too much not to save up for our next adventure!

+ Over to you: what do you think about luck – is luck simply fate, or is it self-created? How do you feel lucky right now? Fan the flames of appreciation below. x

4 Cheap & Cheerful Beauty Buys That Actually Do What They Promise!

Bank account looking a little sad after the annual Christmas spend-a-thon, but you’re (literally) scraping the bottom of the barrel/ bottle/ tube of your favourite beauty products?

Never fear, my friend, I’ve found a few ‘cheap and cheerful’ goodies, and if you’re all about bang for your buck when it comes to beauty, I’ve got a feeling you’ll be as pleasantly surprised as I was!

* Excuse the ridiculous photos. Not my finest… obviously. Carry on.

1. Garnier PureActive ExfoBrusher $11.99

I love a good novelty product, particularly if the funny roll-y knob or – in this case – crazy spiky head, is actually useful.

The idea behind the ExfoBrusher is that the soft flexi-bristle head gently yet deeply cleanses to reduce excess oil and nix blackheads. The formula contains 2% Salicylic Acid which helps remove dead skin and unclog pores, and, trust me on this – your face will seriously never feel cleaner than after to you use it.

I generally use this cleanser in the shower by wetting my face first, then wetting the brush, squeezing the bottle a little until some of the product comes out and then scrubbing my face by moving the head around in a circular motion.

I’m a huge fan of face massages and this is as close as you’re going to get without keeping your facialist on a weekly retainer.

2. Lush ‘Vanillary’ Solid Perfume $10.95

They call this one a “grown up gourmand” perfume and I have to agree. It’s super vanilla-ish, no doubt, but it’s not a flirty, sickly sweet, celebrity-scent kind of vanilla (if that makes any sense at all). Basically, it’s amazing and totally swoon-worthy and men will probably drop at your feet if you wear it. For real.

If you’re thinking of buying one for yourself, I’ve got both the spray version and the solid perfume, and I prefer the latter because it’s not as overpowering strong. Great little gift too, and the perfect size to pop in your sparkliest party clutch!

3. Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector BB Cream $13.95

I picked up Garnier’s BB Cream over the Xmas break after hearing a bunch of beauty bloggers rave about it (what can I say, I’m a sucker for a bit of mad marketing hype) and I’m kind of in love with it!

The idea behind this bad boy (perhaps that’s what’s BB stands for?) (kidding guys, its Blemish Balm) is that it combines the best of skincare and the benefits of makeup, and for under $15, I can tell you that its definitely punching way above its weight. The cream is quite thick and nice and dewy – which is how I like it – and I adore that it evens out my skin tone, whilst giving my face a nice blast of radiance. Winner.

Garnier’s BB Cream is essentially a tinted moisturiser (on steroids) so I’ve been wearing it alone on weekends and mixed with a drop of foundation during the week for a little more coverage. For reference, I bought the Medium shade but it also comes in Light. It contains an SPF 15+ and while 30+ would be better obviously, some protection is better than none at all (note: I always apply a separate 30+ even if the product does have sun protection – one can never be too careful!)

In summary: if I had to describe the way this Miracle Skin Perfector will leave your skin looking in one word, I’d say ‘luminous.’ And who doesn’t want that for the price of a takeaway stir-fry?

4. Rimmel London ‘I Love Lasting Finish’ Nailpolish in Wine Not $5.95

I keep my nail polish in the fridge and there’s one shelf in the door that’s positively bursting at the seams with colourful polishes, ranging from pale, pale pinks to the blackest black. And yet, in that lovely collection, I didn’t have a decent wine/ mulberry coloured polish for some reason, so I grabbed this one in a rush from Priceline before my work Xmas party at the end of last year.

I’ll admit to throwing it in my basket thinking it would be good for a few hours and then my nails would be chip-central, but the price was ridiculously good so I didn’t really mind.

How wrong I was! Not only is the colour perfect, but this nail polish actually lasts longer than some of my $20 polishes – and dare I say, the consistency is totally on par. I’ve been wearing it to death since I bought it and quite a few people have complimented me on the colour, which is always welcome.

Wanna get vampy with it too? ‘Wine Not’ I say.

* Note: these aren’t my nails, pic from here.

Are there any other Aussie’s out there feeling a little perplexed by the schizophrenic “summer” weather at the moment?

B.I.Z.A.R.R.E

In any normal December, my style direction involves wearing flimsy, billowing fabrics in an attempt to stay cool as we swelter and sweat our way through the summer months, but this year I’m inspired by a total mish-mash of looks, with blazers and cropped jeans making a surprise appearance amongst sizzling neons and sexy backless tops.

My favourite piece in the above selection has to be the incredible Zimmermann backless top Jess from Tuula Vintage is rocking. Simple sophistication.

Ahh, the office Kris Kringle.

It can either rock (if your gifter nails it with something you’ll actually use) or it can suck – hard – if Malcolm from I.T draws your name out of the hat and gives you a box of those really horrible chocolates that have been sitting on the shelf at Dinky Di Discounts for far, faaar too long. You know the ones.

“Oh gosh Malcolm… thanks… my favourite!”

No. No. NO! We want to avoid this at all costs so if you think any of the boys in your office need a helping hand with picking the right gift, be sure to casually send this guide their way.
